A new study published in the journal Nature reveals that Google Artificial Intelligence (AI) can spot breast cancer more accurately than a radiologist using a mammogram.
A screening mammogram is intended to detect breast cancer as early as possible so that it may be easier to treat. Despite the existence of screening programmes worldwide, the interpretation of mammograms is affected by high rates of false positives and false negatives, according to Nature.
The article in Nature describes how the Google artificial intelligence (AI) system detects breast cancer faster than human doctors.
According to this UK-US study led by Google Health, Google worked with clinical researchers in the US and the UK.
In another experiment, the team at Google Health pitted its AI against six radiologists working individually. The AI performed better than the radiologists, even though the humans were given patient and family histories.
