Dell advances its HPC portfolio

Dell has extended its high performance computing (HPC) initiative by advancing the portfolio with new solutions, technologies and collaboration with Intel.

Advances to the HPC portfolio includes the introduction of the Dell HPC System Portfolio, an ecosystem of HPC, data analytics solutions and application-specific system offerings for genomic data analysis, manufacturing and research.

The vendor said the new portfolio combines the flexibility of custom systems with the reliability of a preconfigured, factory-built system that includes domain-specific design aimed at science, engineering and analytics workloads using industry-standard building blocks.

Dell vice-president and general manager of engineered solutions and Cloud, Jim Ganthier, claimed HPC is no longer a tool only for sophisticated researchers.

“We’re taking what we’ve learned from working with some of the most advanced, sophisticated universities and research institutions and customising that for delivery to mainstream enterprises. As the leading provider of systems in this space, Dell continues to break down barriers and democratize HPC. We are seeing customers in even more industry verticals embrace its power.”

The vendor also unveiled expansions to its HPC Innovation Lab in collaboration with Intel to support the Intel Scalable System Framework that includes the next-generation Intel Xeon processors, the Intel Xeon Phi processor family and the Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre.

Intel vice president and general manager of HPC platform group, Charles Wuischpard, said Dell is positioned as the largest and fastest-growing customer for Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre.

“Dell’s work on Omni-Path Architecture and next-generation Intel Xeon Phi and their initiatives to expand the Dell Innovation Lab demonstrate their commitment to rapidly expanding the ecosystem for HPC.”

Dell also announced additional investment from Mellanox Technologies into its Innovation Lab to provide an end-to-end EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand supercomputer system.

According to Dell, the system is designed to showcase scalability by leveraging the offloading capabilities and advanced acceleration engines of the Mellanox interconnect as well as provide application specific benchmarking for customers and partners.
