In a major upgrade for productivity users, Google has announced the rollout of Gemini-powered ‘Gems’ to its Workspace suite, including Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Drive. Previously available only via the Gemini app and website, Gems are now integrated directly into the Gemini side panel for paid individual and enterprise Google Workspace users.
Gems are custom AI agents or mini-bots within Google’s Gemini ecosystem. They allow users to program specific roles or tasks just once, removing the need to repeat instructions across sessions. These AI assistants can be tailored with text, files, or images to enhance contextual understanding and deliver more accurate and relevant output “Gems are like having a personal assistant tailored exactly to your needs across all Workspace tools,” Google stated in its blog post.
Where Are Gems Available Now?
Gems will now be accessible within:
-
Gmail
-
Google Docs
-
Google Sheets
-
Google Slides
-
Google Drive
The feature is available via the Gemini side panel, which offers quick access to AI tools within the Workspace environment. However, access is limited to paid Workspace users, both individual and enterprise.
Built-In and Customizable AI Assistants
Google has pre-loaded several ready-to-use Gems, such as:
-
Writing Editor – Offers grammar suggestions and writing feedback
-
Brainstormer – Helps spark ideas and creative directions
-
Sales Pitch Ideator – Creates client-specific proposals and marketing pitches
In addition to these, users can create their own Gems from scratch. By selecting “Create a new Gem” in the side panel, users can define custom roles and give precise instructions for specialized tasks, such as:
-
Writing and analyzing code
-
Summarizing documents
-
Creating social media posts
-
Drafting emails and presentations
Seamless Integration Across Workspace
One of the biggest advantages of this integration is the ability to generate and insert content directly into Workspace apps. For instance, a Gem that summarizes research can insert the output directly into a Google Doc or help craft a reply email within Gmail.
This seamless workflow could save time and reduce repetitive work, giving users a more intuitive and efficient experience within the tools they already use.
Expanding Google’s AI Footprint
This move is part of Google’s larger push to embed Gemini AI capabilities across education and productivity platforms. Recently, Google also introduced 30 new AI tools in Google Classroom and Gemini-powered email summary cards in Gmail.
As competition intensifies in the AI productivity space—with rivals like Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT integrations—Google’s expansion of Gems marks a strategic effort to deepen user engagement and boost the value of its paid Workspace plans.
With the arrival of Gems in Google Workspace, users now have the power to automate, personalize, and streamline their daily workflows using AI. Whether it’s editing content, drafting pitches, or brainstorming new ideas, Gemini’s Gems offer a flexible and powerful toolset that integrates directly into the heart of productivity.
