HPE Acquires Ampool, Accelerates Hybrid Analytics for Customers

With the addition of the Ampool team, HPE Ezmeral gains new expertise in delivering best-in-class open source SQL cloud services on-premises and in hybrid cloud environments. For data engineers and business analysts, cloud native software provides a high-performance analytics engine.

With the expansion of data and cloud capabilities, businesses are increasingly requiring cloud-like data analytics services. Many firms continue to use the Structured Query Language (SQL) as their primary database workload. As HPE works with customers and ISVs to make HPE Ezmeral the software platform of choice for a wide range of data-intensive workloads, a clear need to update the SQL stack has developed. On-premises SQL systems don’t account for the emerging hybrid cloud and scaling requirements. As a result, to address the issues of the hybrid cloud and heterogeneous data landscape, updating the SQL stack is at the forefront of analytics transformations.

To solve this issue, HPE has announced that it has acquired Ampool, an innovative provider of a data platform that provides data engineers and business analysts with a cloud-native, high-performance SQL analytics engine. Ampool will join the HPE Ezmeral software organisation and will play a key role in improving the quality, repeatability, throughput, and time to value for our customers’ AI/ML, analytics, and data-intensive workloads by accelerating HPE Ezmeral analytics runtime for interactive SQL workloads.

Through an elastic as-a-service platform that can run on premises, at the edge, or in a colocation facility, HPE GreenLake provides customers with a robust foundation to accelerate digital transformation. The HPE GreenLake edge to cloud platform provides a range of cloud services, including HPE Ezmeral Container Platform and HPE Ezmeral ML Ops, and blends simplicity and agility with the governance, compliance, and visibility that comes with hybrid IT.

The acquisition adds Ampool’s technological components and open source expertise to the Ezmeral portfolio, which will eventually become a set of SQL acceleration services offered through the HPE GreenLake cloud platform. This acquisition demonstrates HPE’s commitment to developing an open-source-based, IP-rich capability for the HPE Ezmeral software portfolio in order to deliver superior end-to-end analytics in fast-growing markets.

In the recent decade, the nature of SQL-based interactive workloads has altered substantially. Canned business intelligence and data warehouse reporting have evolved into more sophisticated ad-hoc analyses at scale and with more diversified data. On-premises SQL tools are currently stiff, sluggish, and biassed toward a certain underlying storage system, such as HDFS. To overcome the problem of high data transfer costs and data residency restrictions, new innovations are necessary.

A set of loosely coupled cloud-native query engines that can handle numerous analytics and business intelligence tools across a variety of backend data sources is required by organisations. File systems, object storage, and data warehouses are examples of these sources. To assist batch analytics for data engineering, HPE offers a variety of cloud-native Apache Spark products.

The company’s next focus area is supporting SQL runtimes, specifically open source Presto as well as best of breed ISV products for rapid, interactive, ad-hoc analytics use cases. The Ampool team uses open source experience and technology to provide a caching layer to address speed.

The use of multiple ephemeral container-based SQL compute engines, such as Presto and Spark, introduces the need for persistent metadata to be stored and managed externally. Ampool has extensive experience in building a shared metadata catalogue with role-based access control that gives a consistent view of various backend data sources.

With the addition of the Ampool team, HPE Ezmeral team now has new experience to deliver a best in class, open source SQL cloud service on premises and hybrid cloud.
