World Password Day 2023: Industry Insight from CrowdStrike

Comment on World Password Day 2023, which is being observed today , Thursday, 04th May, from Nitin Varma, Managing Director, India & SAARC, CrowdStrike

“In today’s digital age, protecting identities and passwords has become critical for individuals and organizations alike. Analysis from the CrowdStrike Falcon OverWatch threat hunting team indicates that 8 out of 10 attacks (80%) of breaches are identity-driven where they leverage stolen credentials. When a valid user’s credentials have been compromised and an adversary is masquerading as that user, it is often difficult to differentiate between the user’s typical behavior and that of the hacker using traditional security measures and tools. Organizations are increasingly at risk from Active Directory (AD) vulnerabilities as attackers narrow their focus on identities. As threat actors evolve their tactics, so must our collective defenses.

World Password Day serves as an important reminder to individuals and businesses about the importance of password security in protecting sensitive information. To truly safeguard our digital assets, it is essential to use multiple layers of data protection. This includes using tools like multi-factor authentication (MFA), two-factor authentication, encryption, password managers, and zero trust principles.

At CrowdStrike, we recognize the importance of real-time prevention of identity-based attacks and have developed the Falcon® Identity Threat Protection, which combines advanced AI, behavioral analytics, and a flexible policy engine to enforce risk-based conditional access. On this World Password Day, we urge everyone to adopt strong password practices, including using unique, complex passwords, avoiding clicking on unfamiliar links, patching regularly, keeping up to date on the latest scams and learning how to spot an attack. By taking proactive measures to secure our identities and passwords, we can help ensure that our digital assets remain protected from malicious actors.”
