Zscaler has acquired SquareX to expand Zero Trust security directly into standard web browsers, enabling enterprises to protect users on any device — managed or unmanaged — without relying on legacy VPNs, VDIs, or third-party enterprise browsers.
The move builds on Zscaler’s Zero Trust Exchange platform by embedding security controls through lightweight browser extensions, allowing organizations to secure access within popular browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This approach delivers consistent protection while reducing complexity and cost for distributed and BYOD-heavy workforces.
As enterprises move away from vulnerability-prone VPNs and expensive virtual desktop environments, Zscaler has been at the forefront of the Zero Trust transition with solutions like Zscaler Private Access. With the addition of SquareX technology, Zscaler extends the same Zero Trust principles to unmanaged devices, ensuring secure access to SaaS and private applications without full agents or separate browsers.
According to Zscaler, the integration will help organizations stop browser-based threats, protect sensitive data, and securely support AI-driven workflows, all while preserving user experience and productivity.
“Enterprises have historically relied on legacy VPNs and VDIs, but these technologies are fundamentally flawed and laden with security risks,” said Jay Chaudhry, CEO, Chairman, and Founder of Zscaler. “With SquareX, Zscaler is deepening our Zero Trust ExchangeTM Platform’s capabilities in standard browsers, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, to stop threats without having to deploy a third-party enterprise browser. Zscaler continues to set the standard as we evolve into an increasingly powerful platform for global enterprise security.”
“By integrating with Zscaler, we will enable organizations to secure SaaS and private applications across any device – managed or BYOD – without compromising productivity,” said Vivek Ramachandran, founder of SquareX. “This approach allows IT leaders to replace expensive, insecure legacy access tools with precise Zero Trust policies that protect data and AI interactions based on an organization’s specific risk profile.”
The acquisition, completed on February 5, 2026, reinforces Zscaler’s strategy to deliver scalable, cloud-native security for modern enterprises navigating increasingly complex cyber risks.
