Uber buys startup Mighty AI to push for self-driving tech


Mighty AI specialises in computer vision

Close on the heels of Apple acquiring self-driving tech startup Drive.ai, Uber has announced the acquisition of Seattle based startup Mighty AI to boost its efforts for autonomous driving technology.

Mighty AI uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to detect and identify objects for autonomous vehicles.

While the terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed yet, both the companies confirmed to the deal as a part of which ridesharing company will acquire Mighty AI’s intellectual property, tooling, tech talent and labelling community.

Uber said some 40 employees from Mighty AI will join Uber’s advanced technology group developing plans for self-driving cars.

“The team at Mighty AI has built technology to label at scale using the latest AI and user experience techniques,” Jon Thomason, vice president of software engineering for Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group.

“Training our AI at increasing pace is critical to scaling our self-driving technology, and I look forward to bringing Mighty AI’s technology together with our existing labeling automation expertise to help us move even faster.”

“I’m excited to pair Mighty AI’s platform and expertise in generating high-quality labeled data with Uber ATG’s world-class research and engineering to accelerate the development of self-driving technology,” Mighty AI CEO Daryn Nakhuda said in a statement.
