AWS appoints new Cloud CEO

Amazon has appointed Andy Jassy as CEO of Amazon Web Services, initiating an internal promotion that’s been a long time in the making.

Regarded as a key influence in the rise of the tech giant’s most profitable business division, Jassy’s crowning as Cloud chief comes in recognition of annual AWS sales approaching $US10 billion for 2016.

Alongside Jassy’s appointment, Amazon also appointed Jeff Wilke to the role of CEO Worldwide Consumer, as the company zones in on three core areas of business going forward.

As per Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ recent letter to shareowners, this year, Amazon became the fastest company ever to reach $US100 billion in annual sales.

“Marketplace, Prime and AWS are examples of bold bets at Amazon that worked, and they’ve become our three big pillars,” Bezos said.

“And as we’ve grown as a company and those three big pillars have also grown, we’ve decided it makes sense to change the titles of the leaders of those businesses. This is not a reorganisation but rather a recognition of the roles they’ve played for a while.”he added.

After joining Amazon in 1997, Jassy became Senior Vice President of Web Services in 2003, playing a pivotal role in the rise of AWS in 2006.
