Meta has announced that it may pause the development of certain AI systems it deems too risky, despite CEO Mark Zuckerberg‘s vision of making artificial general intelligence (AGI) widely accessible. In its latest Frontier AI Framework, the company outlines a risk-based approach to AI development, categorizing systems as “high-risk” or “critical-risk.”
According to Meta, both categories include AI models that could potentially aid cyberattacks, facilitate fraud, or contribute to biological weapon development. However, the severity of their impact differs—high-risk AI may enable harmful activities but with limitations, while critical-risk AI could lead to catastrophic and irreversible consequences.
To assess these risks, Meta does not rely on a single empirical test. Instead, it consults both internal and external experts, with oversight from senior decision-makers. If an AI system is identified as high-risk, the company will restrict access until it finds ways to mitigate potential threats. In the case of critical-risk AI, development will be halted entirely until the dangers can be properly addressed.
This cautious approach reflects Meta’s commitment to ensuring that advanced AI systems do not pose unmanageable risks to society.
